In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Chhattisgarh, Animal Vatika sanctuary at Chandkhuri has launched a dedicated cremation facility for pet and rescued animals, introducing a scientific and environmentally safe final rites system for deceased pets in State. The modern pet cremation unit was inaugurated by senior veterinary expert Dr Padam Jain in the presence of veterinary professionals Dr Kiran Choudhary, Dr Ajay Verma, Dr Devprabha, Dr Surya Kumar Diwan and Dr Pawan Kumar Sahni. The initiative has been launched by Animal Vatika with the objective of ensuring dignified and hygienic last rites for pets and stray animals. Organisers said the absence of a structured cremation system for companion animals had long been felt by pet owners as animals are increasingly being treated as family members. Animal Vatika director Kasturi Ballal said the organisation had so far buried hundreds of abandoned, injured and pet animals rescued over the years.

However, increasing numbers and environmental concerns prompted the need for a scientific cremation mechanism ensuring hygiene, dignity and ecological safety. The facility includes environment-friendly cremation services, ash collection arrangements and organised farewell management for pet owners. Services will also be available for stray and injured animals rescued by welfare groups and volunteers. Animal welfare activists associated with the project said the initiative marks a sensitive and progressive beginning in the field of animal care infrastructure in Chhattisgarh, particularly at a time when awareness regarding responsible pet care and humane treatment of animals is steadily increasing. The organisers further stated that apart from treatment, rescue and sterilisation work, the sanctuary now aims to provide compassionate support even during the final stage of an animal’s life.
