Jabalpur is bracing for a severe heat wave over the next three to four days, with the mercury expected to cross 44 degrees Celsius. The local weather department has issued a warning, cautioning residents to remain alert as temperatures are likely to peak from Saturday onwards. After a brief spell of relief brought by winds and light showers in the past few days, temperatures have been rising steadily for the last three days. On Thursday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 43.3°C and a minimum of 29.5°C, making it a significantly hotter day compared to the same date last year, when the temperature maximum was 39.1°C and the minimum was 27.1°C.
Spokesman of weather department said that by noon on Thursday, the mercury had already touched 40°C and continued to rise well into the afternoon. He warned that temperatures could go beyond 44°C in the coming days, with the most intense heat expected from Saturday onwards for three to four days.
The Weather Department has urged citizens to take precautions during the heat wave. The department has appealed people to stay indoors between 11 am and 4 pm as far as possible, when the sun is at its most intense.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a water bottle when stepping out. Wear light-coloured, loose and cotton clothing to keep the body cool. Avoid direct sunlight. Use an umbrella, cap, or scarf to cover your head when going outside. The elderly, children and outdoor workers need extra care during heat wave conditions.
