A series of gang wars, murders, and brazen firing incidents in Bhopal has created a profound sense of insecurity among citizens. The expanding networks of criminals across various city sectors and their suspected proximity to the policing apparatus have raised serious questions regarding the efficacy of law and order. Local discussions increasingly highlight a disturbing trend where criminals use the guise of informants to penetrate the system, allowing them to execute crimes and evade capture with alarming ease. The recent months have witnessed sensational crimes that have put police functioning under intense scrutiny. Incidents such as the Hamidia Hospital shooting, the Aishbagh firing, and the high-profile murder of Vivek Rajput in Ashoka Garden have rattled the city. Furthermore, the arrest of Raju Irani from Gujarat underscores that criminals are not only equipped with modern weaponry but also maintain sophisticated inter-state transit networks. The perceived speed at which criminals operate compared to the delayed responses of law enforcement has significantly eroded public trust. According to official police data, there are currently 688 categorised goons and 47 history-sheeters active within the city. In addition, more than 10 organised gangs have firmly established their roots across different parts of Bhopal. These syndicates are involved in a range of illegal activities, including extortion, contract killings, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling. Most concerning for authorities is the revelation that some of these dangerous networks are being managed from within prison walls, exposing vulnerabilities in jail administration and security.

Experts suggest that the traditional police informant system has undergone a dangerous transformation. While reliable informants were once instrumental in preventing crime, their roles have increasingly been usurped by individuals with suspicious backgrounds. These figures often maintain close ties with police officers under the pretense of providing intelligence, only to use that proximity to safeguard their own criminal operations. This dual role has become a major challenge for the department, as internal information is often leaked to the criminal underworld. The influence of specific gangs remains a constant topic of concern across various police station jurisdictions. Networks led by individuals such as Zubair Maulana, Saad Khan, Nasim Baje, Vicky Wahid, Rashid Chuha, and Rusi Khan are highly active. These groups frequently attempt to recruit local youth into the world of crime to expand their territorial dominance. In many instances, these criminals attempt to intimidate locals by claiming to have special ‘connections’ within the police force, thereby establishing a climate of fear in their respective areas. Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar stated that the department is conducting impartial investigations into every case. He clarified that no criminal is being granted any form of political or administrative patronage. Kumar emphasised that active gangs and history-sheeters are under 24-hour surveillance, and special campaigns have been launched to dismantle their networks. The police are currently scrutinising the past records and new associations of these suspects to ensure a comprehensive crackdown on crime in the capital.
