Retired judge granted anticipatory bail in Katara Hills dowry death case, District Court schedules hearing for husband’s bail plea on Monday
Staff Reporter :
The legal proceedings surrounding the suspicious death of Twisha Sharma in the Katara Hills area have escalated following the registration of a formal FIR. Sessions Judge Pallavi Dwivedi, after hearing arguments from both sides, granted anticipatory bail to Giri Bala Singh, a retired judge and current President of the Consumer Forum. While the mother-in-law has secured protection from arrest, the court has deferred the hearing for the victim’s husband, Samarth Singh, until Monday.
Grounds for granting anticipatory bail
The court’s decision to grant bail to Giri Bala Singh was based on several specific factors presented during the hearing. The defense highlighted her advanced age, her long-standing residency in Bhopal, and the absence of any prior criminal record. Despite strong opposition from Additional Government Prosecutor (AGP) Rajesh Singh, the court ruled that these factors warranted protection from immediate custody at this stage of the investigation.
Heightened security presence During Court proceedings
The District Court premises witnessed a highly charged atmosphere during the Friday hearing.
A significant number of advocates gathered to support the retired judge, while a contingent of Indian Army personnel arrived to stand in solidarity with the victim’s brother, Major Harshit Sharma. Although the environment remained tense, the proceedings were conducted peacefully as both groups observed the judicial process from the sidelines.
Evidence of physical assault prior to death
The case stems from the tragic death of 31-year-old Twisha Sharma on the night of May 12. Her family has levelled serious allegations against the in-laws, claiming persistent dowry-related harassment. Major Harshit Sharma stated that visible blue marks were found on his sister’s hands and ears, suggesting she was subjected to physical violence before her death. The family maintains that they will continue their legal battle until absolute justice is served.
Investigation rooted in technical and forensic findings
Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajneesh Kashyap confirmed that the decision to book Giri Bala Singh and Samarth Singh for dowry death and harassment was made after a thorough review. The police action followed the analysis of the post-mortem report and recorded statements from the aggrieved family.
