“Operating on multiple frequencies, the mind is often scattered; Yoga teaches us the discipline of bringing the mind to a single, focused frequency,” said Dr Atul Vaidya, Vice-Chancellor (In-charge) of Kavi Kulguru Kalidas University (KKSU), while addressing the gathering at the launch of Yoga and Mind Management, a book authored by former DGP Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, during a programme held at the Police Bhavan auditorium in Civil Lines on Saturday.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint CP Navinchandra Reddy, The Hitavada Editor Vijay Phanshikar, Director of Prerna College Pravin Joshi, IGP Sandip Patil, CISF Sr Commandant Dilip Kumar Singh and author Dr Upadhyay were present on the dias.
The book is a compilation of 52 selected articles from nearly 170 pieces written by Dr Upadhyay over the past four years for Insight, the Sunday supplement of ‘The Hitavada’.
During his speech, Dr Vaidya described yoga as a “science of the mind” and said, its relevance has increased significantly in modern times. “The more stable the mind becomes, the more effective and virtuous our actions will be,” he said.
Speaking about the idea behind the book, Dr Upadhyay said, it focuses on understanding and controlling the restless human mind through yoga and emotional intelligence.
Referring to the country’s growing mental health concerns, he said, “In the last five years, around 30,000 students have taken their own lives including students of IITs. At its core, this is a matter of mind management,” he remarked.
Pravin Joshi praised Dr Upadhyay and said, the mind and body are deeply interconnected and described the author as one of the finest “mind managers”.
Speaking at the event, Vijay Phanshikar recalled Maharshi Patanjali’s famous Sutra, “Atha Yoga Anushasanam”, and said that the true journey of yoga begins with discipline of the mind. He explained that the Yoga Sutras are far more than spiritual teachings; they offer a deep understanding of how the human mind works and how it can be guided in the right direction.
He noted that the book gives readers practical insights into achieving mental peace and emotional balance. “Only when the mind becomes calm and steady can a person truly experience the divine,” he said.
CP Dr Singal, meanwhile, spoke about the social and spiritual value of such books and said, they can play an important role in shaping a healthier society. Dr Singal also raised concern over the growing trend of vulgar and insensitive content on social media and stressed the need to promote value-based thinking and positivity, especially among the younger generation. ACP Narendra Hiwre compered the programme.
