Death toll in the tragic Bargi Dam incident rose to nine. Authorities informed that nine bodies have been recovered and total 28 people have been rescued safely, while four persons are still reported missing. The cruise tragedy at Bargi Dam on Thursday evening shook the city raising serious concerns and unanswered questions. What began as a routine outing turned into a nightmare within minutes, as people who were sharing moments of joy had no inkling it would be their last journey. The sudden incident has left families shattered and many are still struggling to cope with the loss of their loved ones. In the aftermath, scenes of grief and panic have gripped the area, with distressed relatives searching their loved ones missing.

 

The incident has also brought the issue of accountability to fore. The incident took place around 5.30 pm, nearly 300 metres away from the shore. At the time of the mishap, wind speed was reported to be around 70 km per hour. As per information, the cruise was carrying around 40 to 42 passengers, while tickets had been issued to only 29 people. After rescue operations resumed on Friday morning, the submerged cruise was finally pulled out with the support of heavy machines. An official inquiry has been initiated and detailed findings are awaited. While action is expected against those found negligent, the loss suffered by affected families remains beyond repair. A major tragedy struck Bargi Dam on Thursday evening when a tourist cruise operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department capsized following a storm. 

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He termed the loss of lives in the mishap as extremely distressing. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery to the injured. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be given to next of kin of each deceased from PM National Relief Fund. The injured will receive Rs 50,000.

 

Soon after the incident, teams of the Army, NDRF, SDRF, Home Guards, police and district administration rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. The search continued till around 3 am despite strong winds and poor visibility. The operation resumed at 6 am on Friday. Officials suspected that some passengers might be trapped inside the vessel, so the search was carried out with extreme caution. PWD Minister Rakesh Singh, Chief Secretary Sanjay Dubey, Divisional Commissioner Dhananjay Singh, IG Pramod Verma, Collector Raghavendra Singh, DIG Atul Singh, SP Sampat Upadhyay were present at the site and monitored the operation closely.

 

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the cruise capsizing incident in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and said he stands with them in this difficult time. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident. 

 

The tragedy also revealed heart-wrenching scenes. Marina Macey and her four-year-old son Trishan were among those who died. Rescue teams found the mother holding her child tightly inside her life jacket. Both bodies were recovered clinging to each other. The family had come from Delhi for a visit. The father, Pradeep Macey and daughter Siya survived. The scene left many at the site in tears, including PWD Minister Rakesh Singh. 

 

 

 

Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav had announced compensation soon after the incident. He said that the state government will provide Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. Lack of life jackets, old vessel raise questions Preliminary investigation has revealed that the cruise met with the accident was nearly 20 years old. Several passengers reportedly did not have life jackets at the time of the incident and were given them later. Eyewitnesses also claimed that some people were onboard without valid tickets. The operation of the cruise despite a yellow weather alert has also come under scrutiny.

 

 

Bargi Dam, built on the Narmada river, is a major tourist destination. Construction began in the 1980s and was completed in the 1990s. Located about 40 km from Jabalpur, the site attracts thousands of visitors every year. Activities such as boating, picnics, bird watching and houseboat stays are popular here. However, the incident has once again raised serious concerns over safety standards. Questions are being asked about weather warning systems and whether vessels are carrying passengers beyond permitted capacity.

 

The accident has also brought to light alleged violations of environmental regulations. It is being claimed that diesel operated cruises were running despite clear orders from the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court of India. In 2023, the NGT had directed that motorised boats should not operate in drinking water sources and reservoirs linked to the Narmada river. In March 2024, the Supreme Court upheld this order. Despite this, such cruises were reportedly operating at Bargi Dam, raising questions over compliance by the tourism corporation and local administration. Deputy CM Jagdish Devda visits site Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda visited the site on Friday. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said a detailed inquiry will be conducted. He assured that those found responsible will not be spared. 

 

State Tourism Minister Dharmendra Lodhi visited the site on Friday and reviewed the rescue work. He announced that cruise operations across Madhya Pradesh have been suspended following the incident. He said all vessels will undergo mandatory fitness checks and only those meeting safety standards will be allowed to operate. There are also reports that the person operating the cruise had earlier worked as a cleaner and was later assigned the responsibility of driving the vessel. 

 

Leader of Opposition in State Assembly Umang Singhar also visited the site and criticised the government. He alleged that the administration was insensitive and basic safety arrangements were missing. He questioned the absence of weather monitoring systems and life saving equipment at the site.

 

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reached Jabalpur and met the families of the victims. He visited the residence of Kamraj Arya in West Land area, where five members of a family died and two are still missing. He also visited the home of Neetu Soni in Kotwali area and expressed condolences. Later, he met Syed Riaz Hussain in Civil Lines and condoled the death of his wife Reshma Syed. Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, Minister Rakesh Singh, MLA Ashok Rohani, Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh, BJP City President Ratnesh Sonkar and other public representatives accompanied him. 

 

Kavita Verma, one of the survivors, described the incident as terrifying. She said saving their lives was extremely difficult. “I had a one-year-old child with me. My only focus was to save the child,” she said. She added that her scuba diving training in Israel helped her survive the situation.

 

 

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reached the incident site and reviewed the situation. He inspected the spot for about 15 minutes. Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh and Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, along with senior police and administrative officials, were present during the visit. The Chief Minister also interacted with personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who have been engaged in rescue operations at the site since last night. 

 

 The incident has once again exposed serious gaps in safety management at tourist sites. Sudden storms are common in large reservoirs like Bargi during April and May. Despite this, ignoring weather alerts and safety norms appears to have led to the tragedy. The key question now is whether authorities will enforce strict safety standards or allow such lapses to continue.

 

Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav while talking to the media during inspection of the accident site said a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the Bargi Dam cruise tragedy. He assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible. “All necessary steps will be taken to ensure such an incident does not recur,” he said. The Chief Minister also announced a reward of Rs 51,000 each for members of the rescue teams engaged in the operation. He expressed gratitude to officials associated with Jal Jeevan Mission and other personnel who rushed to the spot without concern for their own safety and helped rescue passengers from the capsized cruise.

 

Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the cruise capsising incident in Jabalpur. He said the tragedy has left him deeply saddened. Extending his heartfelt condolences, he assured the bereaved families that they are not alone in this hour of grief. He prayed for strength and courage for the families to cope with the loss and expressed hope that they find support in this difficult time. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured and said every possible effort should be made to ensure their proper treatment and care.
