I must confess that Mr Vijay Phanshikar’s article on books in ‘Occasional’ column dated May 19, and on the man who finds solace in their silent companionship, touched me profoundly. Indeed, books remain the truest and most faithful friends of mankind. They neither deceive nor abandon; rather, they invigorate the weary spirit, awaken noble thoughts, and illuminate the mind with wisdom gathered across ages.
In the present age, however, one observes with grave concern that, the younger generation is being deprived of the enriching company of books. This absence of sound intellectual guidance is becoming painfully evident upon the streets of our nation, in public discourse, and in the gradual moral confusion that seems to pervade society.
A nation’s direction is ultimately shaped by the character and wisdom of its youth, and wisdom cannot flourish where thoughtful reading has vanished.
Instead of seeking knowledge from literature, philosophy, and history, many young minds are increasingly consumed by social media platforms, which are often manipulated by political interests for personal or partisan gain. Such influences seldom cultivate independent thought; rather, they encourage distraction, division, and superficial understanding.
Books, on the other hand, nurture reflection, discipline, and moral clarity. They teach humanity, reason, and the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood. If the youth of our country are once again guided towards the companionship of books, they shall discover not merely knowledge, but also purpose, virtue, and the right path in life. Only then can the nation hope to move steadfastly in a noble and enlightened direction.
