A stray dog attacked two infant sisters in Agasoud village under Patan tehsil, leaving both children seriously injured. The incident has spread fear among villagers and renewed demands for action against the growing menace of stray dogs. As per the information received the mother, Sulochana was working inside the house when the dog attacked her three-year-old daughter, who was playing outside. Hearing the child’s screams, Sulochana rushed out with a stick and drove the dog away. But before she could secure the house, the dog entered inside and clamped its jaws around her six-month-old infant, who was sleeping on the floor. Sulochana cried out for help. Neighbours rushed in and managed to free the baby from the dog’s grip. Both children suffered deep wounds. Their father Naresh was away for work at the time.

The family rushed both girls to the Patan health centre. As their condition was serious, they were referred to Jabalpur. Local residents helped admit them to a private hospital in the city. Doctors have advised surgery due to severe injuries on girl’s face. The incident has exposed the failure of civic authorities to control stray dog populations. The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation has spent crores of rupees on sterilisation drives in 15 years, yet the stray dog count in the city has crossed nearly one lakh. Not a single proper shelter home has been built in the district. The Supreme Court issued guidelines on stray dogs in 2025, but these are not being followed on the ground. Villagers have demanded urgent action from the administration. It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld its directions ordering removal of stray dogs from public places like schools, hospitals and railway stations to shelters. The court also permitted authorities to euthanise rabid, incurably ill or dangerous and aggressive dogs. It warned of contempt action against officials failing to comply.
