The Congress party’s delayed decision on appointing the Nagpur Rural District Congress Committee president has triggered intense political speculation within local party circles. While the party has already announced the name of Praful Gudadhe as the Nagpur city unit chief, the suspense over the rural unit indicates that internal consultations and power equations are still at play.
The delay becomes significant in the backdrop of the organisational reforms proposed during the 2022 Udaipur “Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir,” where the Congress resolved to restructure district leadership and replace office-bearers who had completed five years in a post. Following this policy, senior leaders Vikas Thakre and Rajendra Mulak had resigned from their respective positions in Nagpur city and rural units.
However, the implementation of those reforms has not been uniform.
While Thakre was later continued in a key role, the rural leadership saw a change after Rajendra Mulak contested the Assembly elections following denial of a ticket. Ashwin Bais was subsequently brought in as Nagpur Rural Congress president.
Now, with the party once again undertaking organisational reshuffling in Maharashtra, attention has turned to whether Bais will continue or whether Congress will opt for a new face.
Political observers within the party believe the influence of senior Congress leader Sunil Kedar remains decisive in the ongoing appointments. The selection of Praful Gudadhe as city Congress chief is widely being seen as reflecting Kedar’s organisational hold in Nagpur Congress.
Ashwin Bais too is considered close to Kedar, which strengthens the possibility of his continuation. Sources suggest the party leadership may prefer continuity in rural organisational setup, especially ahead of upcoming local body elections and organisational strengthening exercises.
At the same time, the delay in announcement also hints at competing aspirations within the party.
Senior Congressman Suresh Bhoyar is also learnt to have shown interest in the post. His name has added another layer to the internal discussions.
Congress leaders privately admit that balancing factional equations while implementing organisational reforms has become a challenge for the party leadership in Maharashtra.
At present, Ashwin Bais appears to have an advantage due to his proximity to influential leaders and the absence of any major controversy during his tenure. Yet, Congress may also use the opportunity to send a message that the Udaipur reform commitments are being implemented seriously.
Bais hails from Wadi while Bhoyar is from Kamptee. Bhoyar was fielded by Congress against Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
