In a concerning incident amid an intense ongoing heatwave, 37 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets fell severely ill after suffering from heatstroke and dehydration during a training camp. The incident took place on Thursday evening at PDPM IIITDMJ campus located on Dumna Road, Jabalpur. Following sudden outbreak of illness, panic gripped the training camp. A total of 31 affected cadets were immediately rushed to the Government Seth Govinddas District Hospital (Victoria) for emergency medical treatment. The influx continued into Friday, with 6 more cadets being admitted to the hospital after exhibiting similar symptoms.

The entire Mahakoshal region is currently under the threat of extreme summer conditions, with temperatures hovering around 45°C. According to administration and health department officials, the scorching heat and severe heat stroke are the primary reasons behind the cadets falling sick. The 10-day Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC-98), organized by the Madhya Pradesh Armed Squadron NCC, commenced on May 14 and is scheduled to run until May 24. More than 450 NCC cadets from various districts including Jabalpur, Seoni, Katni, Chhindwara, Narsinghpur, Tendukheda, Katangi and Nunsar, are attending the camp. Several cadets began complaining of dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea and extreme physical weakness. While the extreme weather is the primary suspect, reports also surfaced indicating that the health of some cadets deteriorated rapidly last night after consuming dinner, triggering immediate bouts of vomiting. Upon receiving information about the incident, senior NCC officers and top officials from the District Health Department rushed to hospital.

A specialised team of doctors from the local medical college has also been deployed to assist the district hospital staff. The affected cadets have been placed under strict 24-hour medical observation. Their families have been formally informed about the situation. When contacted, Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Naveen Kothari told “Treatment for all NCC cadets is actively underway at the hospital. They all fell victim to heatstroke. They are currently under close medical supervision. Meanwhile their condition is now improving and many of them are about to discharge. But the cadets who have been admitted on Friday along with others, will be kept under supervision for next 24 hours." The administration is continuously monitoring the health of the remaining cadets at the campsite to prevent further casualties.
