Bear attacks on human beings and livestock have increased at different districts of the Chhattisgarh in last one year and only in just four months, conflict with bear has claimed one life and injured five other people. Wildlife experts and forest officials attribute this behavioural shift largely to impact of climate change.
As per reports of the health department and forest department, due to the attack of bear, a 26-year old man lost his life at rural parts of Korba district on March 2026. Similarly, two teenage girls were injured by the attack of bear at Gariyaband district on May 2026 and a woman lost her 55 per cent vision due to the attack of bear in village located in Manendragarh-Chimari-Bharatpur district.
“There are three key conditions required for bears to go into
hibernation, global warming and scarcity of food in forests. Due to these conditions, now bears are entering into villages and attacking human beings as well as livestock,” said Dr Shailendra Shrivastava, wildlife expert.
The problem has become acute in several parts of the state where bears have attacked humans, cows and other ones. The officials and staffs of the forest department do all efforts to control the entry of bears in forests but at present, they are achieving success in it and bears are still entering in village and attacking people.
