Fuel crisis deepens as commuters pay

In a staggering trend that highlights the relentless pace of inflation, petrol prices in the State capital have been rising by an average of nearly 52 Paise every single day over the last ten days. This compounding daily burn has culminated in a massive total increase of Rs 5.18 per litre, pushing the retail cost of petrol to a gruelling high of Rs 111.69 per litre and catching daily commuters completely off guard. The crisis unfolded through three sharp, back-to-back revisions that began on Friday, May 15, when petrol prices broke past regular boundaries with a steep single-day jump, rapidly ascending from a weekly low of Rs 106.51 to Rs 109.80 per litre.

The financial pressure on local households compounded just days later on Tuesday, May 19, when a second sequential revision pushed the cost up further to Rs 110.78 per litre. With the latest market data reflecting an additional Rs 0.91 hike at local fuel pumps, the sheer speed of this ten-day accumulation has left city residents with absolutely no breathing room to adjust their personal expenses. Explaining the underlying cause of this surge and its sudden impact on local supply, District Supply Officer (DSO)

Chandrabhan Singh Jadon stated that the international market has witnessed a sharp spike in crude oil prices. Because fuel is being procured at a significantly higher cost, it has triggered a direct trickle-down effect. According to Jadon, commercial and industrial petrol and diesel prices have actually been increased by Rs 49 per litre. The same burden could not be shifted to the domestic consumers. However, due to this massive gap, commercial buyers are rapidly shifting their purchases toward domestic oil pumps. This migration has caused an unprecedented surge in local domestic demand, with petrol demand shooting up by 19 per cent and diesel demand climbing by 40 per cent across the city.

This dramatic shift and the resulting supply pressure have triggered widespread anxiety among retail consumers in Bhopal, where reliance on personal vehicles is exceptionally high. For regular commuters and middle-class families, having three steep hikes stacked together in less than two weeks, while simultaneously competing with commercial buyers at domestic stations, is creating a double burden. Local residents express deep concern over how these escalating costs are completely disrupting daily life. Shailendra (name changed), a schoolteacher who commutes 12 kilometres daily to his workplace, noted that the rapid sequence of price hikes has made it nearly impossible to maintain a fixed monthly household budget, with every trip to the fuel station draining essential savings. Similarly, Seeta, a university student navigating the city on a rigid monthly allowance, highlighted that even after adopting strict car-pooling habits with peers, the cumulative five-rupee jump leaves virtually no room to absorb the extra expenses without cutting back on other basic necessities.
