Gwarighat police have solved a major theft case and arrested a mother-son duo involved in stealing gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 20 lakh. The arrested accused have been identified as Jyoti Thakur (55), wife of Chandrabhan Singh Thakur and her son Yash Thakur (24), son of Chandrabhan Singh Thakur, residents of Kanchanpur Ret Naka, Gwarighat.
According to police, complainant Shivendra Pratap Singh (42), a resident of Aastha Nagar, Gwarighat, works as a scientist in Pennsylvania, USA and
lives there with his wife and children. He informed police that on November 5, 2025, his mother Nalini Dwivedi fell seriously ill and was admitted to a hospital in Jabalpur by his cousin Amit Suhane. After receiving the information, he arrived in Jabalpur on November 9, 2025.
His mother later died during treatment on January 16, 2026. After completing the last rites, the family kept her old jewellery in the bedroom locker, including gold earrings, bangles, chains, pendants, necklaces, mangalsutra, rings and silver ornaments weighing around 500 grams.
On May 10, 2026, while preparing to return to the United States, Shivendra checked the locker and found that almost all gold jewellery was missing.
Only one gold bangle and the silver ornaments remained inside the box, while the empty jewellery boxes had been placed back in the locker to avoid suspicion.
Acting on the complaint, Gwarighat police registered a case under Sections 331(4) and 305(a) of BNS and began investigation.
During questioning of domestic workers and nearby residents, suspicion fell on househelp Jyoti Thakur, who used to cook at the house. When taken into custody and interrogated, she confessed to the theft and revealed that she had handed over some of the jewellery to her son Yash Thakur for safekeeping while hiding the remaining ornaments in her home cupboard.
Police later detained Yash Thakur and recovered stolen jewellery on the basis of the accused persons’ statements. The recovered items include a gold necklace, pendant and earring set, ear tops, mangalsutra set, chain, four gold bangles, old-style earrings, gold-studded lakh bangles, ring and other ornaments.
