By DR BHUSHAN KUMAR UPADHYAYA :
Modern medicine has
achieved remarkable success in treating diseases,
extending life expectancy, and
alleviating human suffering.Yet
across cultures and traditions, one
time less truth emerges that healing is not only physical.
Human beings recover not only
through tablets, surgeries or therapies ,but also through love, compassion, emotional safety, and
meaningful connections.Medicine
mayrepair the body, but love and
care nourishes the mind, regulate
nervous system, and awaken
inner will to heal.
Indian Ayurvedic traditions have
already recognised the deeper
dimensions of human health. In
the Yogicsystem, ahuman being
is viewed not only as aphysical
structure, but aunion of the mind,
energy, emotions, and consciousness.
Disturbances that manifest in
the body often begininthe subtler
layers of stress, fear, loneliness,
anger, and emotional imbalance.
Yoga emphasises harmony in relation, balance in emotions, and
compassion in behavior as the
essential foundation of well being.
The Yogicconcepts of Maitri and
Karuna -friendliness and compassion outlined in the Yoga Sutras of
Patanjali are not just ethical teachings, but physical andpsychological principles.
Aloving environment calms
mental agitations and reduces
inner conflicts. Bhakti Yoga teaches surrender, devotion, and emotional connection as the pathways
to peaceand freedom.
Aperson who feels loved experiences less fear and greater emotional resiliencewhich directly
influences overall health.
Ancient Indian wisdom including Buddhism understands that
healing occurs when themind
shiftsfrom anxiety to trust.Lord
Buddha has been called aBheshaj
or agreat physician.
Apatient
supported by love develops hope
and hope itself becomes amedicine. The presence of a compassionate mother, supportive friend,
and acaring doctor can create
profound changes in the body and
the mind.
The above is not only apoetic
statement, but modernneurosciencevalidates many of these
insights.
Neuroscienceshowsthat emotions deeply influencebrain chemistry, bodily function, and overall
behavior. When aperson experiences love and care, the brain
releases chemicals like oxytocin,
serotonin, and dopamine. Oxytocin
is called abonding hormone
which reducesstress and promotes afeeling of safety andtrust.
Apositive emotional state reduces
cortisol ,the stress hormone which
weakens immunity and increases
inflammation in the body.
Research in neurosciencehas
demonstrated that loneliness ,
chronic stress, and emotional neglect can impair healing and
increase vulnerability to different
diseases.Conversely, social support and emotional care improves
immune functions, reduces recoverytime, and even influences survival rates in serious diseases.
Doctors across the worldrecognise
that treating the patient with care
and empathy enhances the healing speed.Areassuringconversation, attentive listening, and emotional encouragement can reduce
pain perception and improve
treatment outcomes.Studies have
shownthat the patients who feel
emotionally supported often
respond better to the treatment
and medication.
Healing is not only biochemical,
but relational also.This does not
mean that medicines are unnecessary. They are indispensable, but
when combined with emotional
nourishment, they heal better.
Love and care do not replacescience, but certainly improve its
effectiveness.
The Indian system treats healing
not only as the absence of diseases, but the restoration of
wholeness.This wholeness comes
from mental andemotional support. This is the reason that
Ayurveda always emphasises the
integrative approach of treatment.
