Role of several

The role of several meter readers has come under suspicion after large-scale electricity theft was detected in industrial and commercial connections across Jabalpur city. A departmental review revealed possible involvement of field staff posted in the affected areas. Officials said complaints regarding irregular meter readings and suspicious meter replacements strengthened concerns about internal collusion. In several cases, meters were replaced just days before inspections, despite smart meters functioning properly at consumer premises. City Circle Superintending Engineer Sanjay Arora informed that nearly 150 meter readers from all city divisions were called for a review meeting at the circle office. Executive engineers and other officials from all five divisions joined through Google Meet. During the meeting, meter readers were directed to submit written information about large consumers involved in electricity theft in their respective areas. They were also allowed to anonymously report such activities through a complaint box installed at the circle office, with assurance of confidentiality.

Officials informed the staff that major power thefts had recently been detected at embroidery units, almirah manufacturing factories and e-rickshaw operations. Authorities questioned how such widespread thefts could continue without the knowledge of local field personnel. During the review, IT Manager Ashok Hardaha was issued a notice for failing to properly review meter readings. Officials also sought details of meter readers posted at the same location for over five years for possible transfers. According to SE Arora, four meter readers had already been blacklisted in May for meter reading manipulation while two more were blacklisted during the latest review. Meanwhile, meter reader Sumit Dubey reported that nearly 400 consumers in Omti, Bhartipur and Udiya Mohalla had refused meter reading access. Following this, junior engineer Varun Darve was issued a show-cause notice for inaction. Officials warned that strict action, including FIRs, would be taken against anyone found involved in electricity theft.
