Much awaited next generation Light Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (LAMV) has been fielded for field trials in extreme climatic conditions in tough terrains of Leh and Ladakh. Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) under the Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) has introduced its indigenous LAMV, a highly mobile 4x4 armoured platform designed to meet the evolving operational needs of troop transportation, reconnaissance missions and urban warfare scenarios. Sources informed that LAMV is being tested in the field trials in tough terrains of Leh and Ladakh since around ten days. It is expected that LAMV will fulfill the desired tasks and soon get a green signal for its bulk production by the competent authorities. The advance defence vehicle has been designed on the demand of the armed forces, keeping in view future strategic war fares. Defence analysts believe the LAMV represents a significant step forward in indigenous armoured mobility solutions, aligning with India’s broader push toward modernisation and self-reliance in defence manufacturing under ‘Make in India’ initiative. Developed with advanced survivability and battlefield adaptability in mind, LAMV combines ballistic protection, under-hull blast resistance and high maneuverability, making it suitable for both conventional and asymmetric combat environments.

Powered by a 450 BHP engine paired with an automatic transmission, the vehicle features a double wishbone independent suspension system at both the front and rear, ensuring superior off-road handling and crew stability. LAMV is also equipped with dual fail-safe brakes with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) to enhance operational safety in difficult terrain. The armored platform accommodates a crew configuration of 02+02 personnel and includes five doors for rapid ingress and egress during combat operations. To improve situational awareness and mission coordination, the vehicle integrates a 360-degree camera system, advanced navigation compatible with NavIC, GPS and GLONASS and a telescopic retractable mast with multipurpose mounting brackets for surveillance and communication equipment. LAMV also offers extensive onboard storage for battlefield equipment including BFSR systems, HHTI devices, radio sets, ammunition, rocket launchers and INSAS rifles, enabling troops to sustain prolonged operations in hostile environments. In terms of performance, the vehicle is capable of carrying a 1,500 kg payload and achieving speeds of up to 100 km/h. It can negotiate gradients greater than 30 degrees, side slopes exceeding 17 degrees and ford water obstacles up to 0.75 meters without preparation. The vehicle is also designed for limited aquatic mobility, operating in water at speeds up to 3 knots.
