A significant shift has been witnessed in tourists’ behavior especially at ‘Bada Talab’ (Lake View), the capital’s premier tourism hub, post the tragic Bargi cruise tragedy in Jabalpur. Wearing life jackets has always been mandatory for boating, tourists are no longer just putting them on as a formality. Instead, they have become more vigilant about the quality and proper fit of the equipment. Visitors arriving at Lake View are now ensuring safety arrangements and presence of rescue teams before purchasing tickets. This new approach reflects growing seriousness of tourists towards their personal safety. The most crucial link in this change is safety of children. Previously, it was common to see children being made to wear oversised life jackets designed for adults, which posed a serious safety risk. During ground reporting, 47-year-old Rajesh, who came for boating with his child, stated that he explicitly told the operator he would only proceed if a life jacket perfectly sized for his child was available.

He also appreciated that a dedicated counter has been set up at the site for providing proper life jackets, ensuring that every individual gets the right gear before entering the water. According to Rajesh, there should be no compromise on children’s safety and parents must take the initiative to ensure the correct jacket size. Tourists have become alert and aware regarding boat capacity and general safety protocols. Neetu shared her experience, mentioning that while she was seated in a boat, discussions arose regarding safety and seating arrangements. To ensure a safe journey, she and other passengers provided mutual counseling to ensure only the designated number of people were on board. Tourists believe that paying attention to these small safety details is the only way to make tourism enjoyable. This proactive involvement of the public is significantly reducing the risk of accidents and steering Bhopal’s tourism in a newer, safer direction.
