Roads meant to connect neighbourhoods have been transformed into obstacles, while citizens are left wondering whether anyone in the administration has paused to consider the consequences of its decisions.

A city does not collapse overnight. It collapses when authorities begin treating citizen’s daily struggles as insignificant inconveniences. In Harihar Nagar and Jayanti Nagari-2, residents are witnessing exactly that - a complete breakdown of planning, accountability, and civic responsibility. What should have been a routine infrastructure upgrade has instead become a daily ordeal for many residents. Roads meant to connect neighbourhoods have been transformed into obstacles, while citizens are left wondering whether anyone in the administration has paused to consider the consequences of its decisions. Nearly every approach road leading to the locality has been dug up, blocked, or left unfinished, creating a situation where simply reaching home has become a challenge.

The problem is not that roads are being repaired. The problem is how they are being repaired. In a shocking display of poor planning, multiple access roads have reportedly been excavated simultaneously, reveals a visit to the site, leaving residents with little or no viable alternatives. One road is dug, another is dug up and a third remains incomplete. The result is an entire locality struggling under a man-made crisis created all in the name of development. The most basic principle of infrastructure management is to minimise public inconvenience while work is underway. Yet, in Harihar Nagar, inconvenience appears to have become the plan itself. Daily commuters are forced to navigate damaged stretches, motorists are playing price through vehicle wear and tear, and emergency access remains a growing concern. “My vehicle got punctured twice trying to make a way from the road. Once, I also fell onto the road, which led to minor injuries,” lamented Rishi, a resident. Equally alarming is the apparent disregard for public safety. Open trenches, uneven surfaces, inadequate barricading and a lack of proper warning signs have turned construction zones into potential accident sites.

Everyday, school children, senior citizens, pedestrians and two-wheeler riders are forced to take risks simply to move through their own neighbourhood. Development should never come at the cost of public safety, feel the residents. “The ongoing work is part of road widening and pre-monsoon preparations aimed at preventing water-logging and improving the drainage system. However, the contractor started work on multiple roads simultaneously, causing significant inconvenience to citizens. Once these works are completed, appropriate action will be taken against the contractor for the inconvenience caused,” said Bharat Nandanwar, Chief Officer (CO), Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat. Adding to public frustration are allegations that certain encroachments continue to exist along the road-widening corridor, creating bottlenecks even as widening work progresses elsewhere. “If roads are being widened selectively, while obstructions remain untouched, serious questions must be raised about transparency, fairness and the effectiveness of the entire project,” said another resident.

What has perhaps angered residents the most is the perception of administrative indifference. Many openly question whether officials and elected representatives have travelled through these roads in recent weeks. Had they done so, they would have experienced firsthand the dust, delays, diversions and dangers that citizens endure every single day. Development is not measured by the number of roads dug up. It is measured by how efficiently, safely and responsibly public projects are executed. The growing anger in Harihar Nagar is a warning that authorities cannot afford to ignore. Citizens have shown patience. They have tolerated delays, inconvenience and uncertainty. But patience is not unlimited. Every day that these roads remain incomplete, every day that safety measures remain inadequate, and every day that residents are forced to navigate this chaos, public trust erodes further.
