THE Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the construction of the general pool residential accommodation at Andhra Pradesh’s new capital city, Amaravati, with an investment of Rs 1,234.91 crores “The project will be funded by the Government of India through budgetary support under the Head of Account: 4216 – Capital Outlay on Housing (Residential Buildings),” a Cabinet communique said. The project will be executed by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs through the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Pre-bid activities have already commenced, and the preparation of tender documents is presently in progress, it added. The objective of the proposal is to alleviate the financial burden on Central government employees by providing adequate residential accommodation, thereby enhancing their morale, promoting integrity, and contributing to their overall well-being. Further, by enabling staff to reside in close proximity to their workplaces, the project will support efficient government functioning and ensure that employees remain readily available to discharge their official duties effectively, the communique said.
 
Cabinet approves Phase 2(A) of Ahmedabad Metro Rail project The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project, a 6.032-km extension to strengthen connectivity between key residential and commercial hubs in the city, officials said. According to an official statement, the project will provide seamless integration with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro corridor. Sports infrastructure is also likely to be developed in the surrounding areas ahead of the World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030. Phase 2(A) will comprise four elevated stations and one underground station. Once the new phase is operational, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km. The names of the five stations are -- Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport. The total project cost, including interest during construction (IDC), is estimated at Rs 2,169.04 crore. The Phase 2(A) represents a significant advancement in the city’s infrastructure development and acts as a major expansion of the Metro Rail network in the city, the statement said.
 
“By bridging these vital areas with the metro network, Phase 2(A) will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic activity, tourism, and ease urban mobility for both residents and visitors,” it added. The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2(A) will generate employment for around 2,000 persons during the peak period of construction activity, and 500 persons are likely to work during the operation and maintenance of the system, it added.
