A dramatic shift in weather systems has brought a mix of relief and chaos to Madhya Pradesh. While a severe heatwave gripped Chhindwara district, widespread pre-monsoon showers, lightning, and strong winds lashed multiple divisions, causing temperatures to drop sharply in several areas. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Bhopal, a significant dip in mercury is on the cards, with maximum temperatures expected to fall gradually by 2°C to 3°C across the state over the next three days. Extreme Contrasts: Hailstorm in Seoni, 43°C heat in Khajuraho: The State presented a picture of weather extremes. Khajuraho and Nowgong recorded the highest maximum temperature at a scorching 43.0°C, closely followed by Damoh at 42.8°C and Satna at 42.7°C. Conversely, the scenic hill station of Pachmarhi recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 20.8°C, alongside the lowest maximum at 36.2°C.

While Chhindwara battled intense heatwave conditions, Seoni was hit by a fierce hailstorm. Massive dust storms and severe thunderstorms also swept through Bhind, Datia, Gwalior, and Morena, blinding commuters and uprooting weak structures. Gwalior clocked the highest wind speed at a roaring 59 km/h, followed by Satna at 50 km/h and Sidhi at 48 km/h. Heavy rain lashes Chambal and Rewa: Pre-monsoon rainfall was recorded at many places across the Chambal and Rewa divisions, and at isolated pockets in Gwalior, Jabalpur, Shahdol, and Sagar. Gaurihar topped the charts with a heavy downpour of 56.0 mm, followed by Devendranagar at 48.3 mm and Sohawal at 35.0 mm. Rewa and Satna also received substantial showers, registering 30.6 mm and 28.2 mm of rain, respectively. This moisture influx led to a dramatic plummet in night temperatures. Minimum temperatures fell markedly by -6.8°C in the Rewa division and appreciably by up to -3.1°C in Gwalior and Sagar divisions, bringing a much-needed cool breeze after sunset. Active weather systems across Central India:

The current weather volatility is being driven by multiple overlapping synoptic systems. The Southwest Monsoon is advancing steadily through the Bay of Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand, with conditions becoming highly favorable for its entry into neighbouring Chhattisgarh within the next 48 to 72 hours. Closer to home, a Western Disturbance persists as a cyclonic circulation over north Haryana. Additionally, a seasonal trough is running directly across northern Madhya Pradesh, complemented by a cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan, creating a fertile environment for sustained thunderstorm activity. Yellow Alert Issued: Hail and 60 km/h winds forecast:

The IMD has issued a stern weather warning. An isolated hailstorm warning, accompanied by lightning and high-speed gusty winds ranging between 50 to 60 km/h, has been issued for Datia, Bhind, Morena, Seoni, Balaghat, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Niwari districts. Furthermore, a general thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty wind (40-50 km/h) alert is active for a large part of the state, including the capital city of Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Narmadapuram, Jabalpur, and Gwalior. Forecast for Bhopal and neighbourhood: Bhopal experienced a humid Friday morning with relative humidity peaking at 78%. While the capital stayed dry during the day with a maximum temperature of 39.7°C, the evening is expected to turn breezy. Temperatures in the capital are likely to hover around 39°C (Maximum) and 28°C (Minimum).
