Embarrassment An Underexplored Emotion

In a recent episode of ‘Subway Takes’, a viral new-age internet show, the actor, Austin Butler, says, “Embarrassment is an underexplored emotion. So go out there and make a fool of yourself.” Ever since I heard it, it has stayed with me. Even though I do not think one should act stupid, but oftentimes, I feel people forget to have fun in life because they are too busy thinking about others’ perceptions. We are too scared of being embarrassed and laughed at. But, if you think about it, its so much more likely that others are too busy thinking about themselves and their own insecurities to even notice what we are doing. So why stop yourself from having fun?

The constant insecurities plaguing the mind have been amplified by social media. The fact that people are always looking to take out their phones and start shooting other people’s embarrassing moments makes us act guarded. But then, life isn’t an unlimited resource. We only get as much time so why not make the most out of it? Life is so much better when we make most of our own time and let others do what they want to. Our fear of embarrassment actually stems from our own tendency to make a big deal out of small things, making fun of others etc. More often than not, people who do not have the courage to step on the dance floor or take on a microphone tend to judge others when they do these things.

Change has to come from both sides where we don’t let others affect our lives but we also show empathy and encouragement to others. When we are confident in our own skin, we become more efficient and achieve our highest potential. Stop waiting for thing to be ‘normalised’. Be the change you want to see. Stop the fear of embarrassment, instead, take that fun route and make most of your life. As they say, “It’s not the years in your life that count, but what matters is the life in your years”.
