A 16-year-old patient suffering from a severe deformity of the spine, namely ‘Scoliosis’, has been successfully treated by doctors at AIIMS Bhopal through modern robotic surgery. Due to this disease, the patient’s spine had abnormally bent to one side instead of remaining straight, completely disrupting his body balance, shoulder, and waist alignment. Due to the apprehension of many other serious physical and health-related complications occurring in the future, there was significant concern for the patient and his family regarding future health risks. In the hope of better treatment, the family members had previously visited several other medical institutions and hospitals, but the patient could not get the desired benefit or relief from anywhere. Subsequently, the family members consulted the specialists at AIIMS Bhopal Here, the patient’s condition was examined and evaluated by doctors in the Department of Orthopaedics. Following this, the expert team of Dr Pankaj Kumar Mishra and Dr Teja from the department, seeing the critical condition of the patient, decided to perform a complex spine deformity correction surgery with the help of robotic technology.

During the process of this sensitive operation, the state-of-the-art ‘Intraoperative Neuro-Monitoring’ technique was specifically used by the doctors, through which continuous and accurate monitoring of the patient’s nerve function was done during the surgery. This modern technology provided high precision to the doctors during the surgery, completely reducing the risk of neurological hazards and complications like paralysis during the operation. After the completion of this process, a major improvement has been observed in the patient’s physical condition. On this medical achievement, Dr Rehan-ul-Haq, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, said that modern and innovative technologies like robotic assistance and neuro-monitoring play an extremely helpful and important role in ensuring patient safety and improving the outcomes of complex treatments in today’s time. He also emphasised on continuously promoting such innovative technologies in the treatment of complex spine disorders. Meanwhile, Professor (Dr) Madhabananda Kar, Executive Director and CEO, said that this type of surgeries proves that now serious patients with complex medical conditions do not need to go far for advanced treatment at all, because all these state-of-the-art medical facilities and technologies are now available within AIIMS Bhopal itself.
