The Silica Reduction Plant (SRP) of Dalli Mechanised Mine, operated by SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), has achieved a major milestone by crossing 2 million tonnes of cumulative production on June 4, 2026. The achievement marks a significant step towards efficient utilisation of iron ore resources and sustainable steel production. The plant started production in October 2023 after being inaugurated in June 2023. It reached its first one million tonne production milestone on May 7, 2025, after 563 days of operation. The second million tonnes were achieved in just 393 days, reflecting a notable improvement in productivity and operational efficiency. The Silica Reduction Plant, also known as a Beneficiation Plant, was established to reduce silica content in iron ore fines smaller than 1 mm that contain high silica impurities.

Equipped with advanced beneficiation technology, the facility upgrades the quality of iron ore supplied to Bhilai Steel Plant. The project is an important part of SAIL’s strategy to maximise the use of low-grade iron ore resources. With the gradual decline in the quality of reserves at the over six-decade-old Dalli-Rajhara mines, beneficiation has become essential to achieve the desired ore grade for blast furnace operations. Officials said the improved ore quality helps enhance hot metal production, reduce coke consumption, improve furnace efficiency and lower carbon emissions, supporting SAIL’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible steelmaking.
