Raipur :
Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka has initiated efforts to develop the Gajraj Dam, spread across approximately 230 acres in Kamal Vihar, Raipur,
into a large reservoir to help
meet the city’s growing drinking water needs.
The proposal was discussed during a special meeting held at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, where Governor Deka met Raipur Mayor Meenal Choubey and Additional Commissioner
Vinod Pandey.
During the discussion, the Governor emphasized that the Gajraj Dam, which is currently not being utilised for irrigation purposes, could be transformed into a vital source of drinking
water for Raipur after repairs and restoration work. He said the reservoir has the potential to become a key component of Raipur’s water infrastructure and could strengthen the city’s long-term water security.
Governor Deka noted that developing the dam as a dedicated drinking water storage facility would help ensure the availability of clean and adequate water for residents, particularly in view of the city’s expanding population and rising demand for potable water. He directed the Mayor to coordinate with the concerned departments and officials to examine the feasibility of the project and take appropriate steps toward its implementation. The Governor also stressed the importance of inter-departmental cooperation to expedite the process and maximize the utility of the existing water resource. If implemented, the project could provide Raipur with an additional and sustainable source of drinking water while reviving an underutilized water body within the city limits.
