Rowghat Rail Line enters final phase

RAIPUR :

Dalli Rajhara–Rowhat Rail Project achieved a major milestone on Wednesday with the commencement of a technical trial on the Rowghat rail section, bringing the long-awaited launch of passenger train services a significant step closer. Trial was conducted using a 58-wagon BoxN rake under controlled speed and limited load conditions. Railway authorities stated that the testing process will continue in multiple phases over the coming days to comprehensively assess the operational capability of the rail corridor, structural stability of the track and bridges, and compliance with all prescribed technical and safety standards. The development marks the beginning of the final stage of the strategically important rail project, which is expected to strengthen connectivity in the Bastar region while supporting industrial logistics requirements. The nearly 95-kilometre Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat Rail Project is being implemented jointly by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Indian Railways. Conceived under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2008, the project was initially planned to facilitate transportation of iron ore from the Rowghat mines. Over time, however, it has emerged as a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at integrating remote areas of Bastar with mainstream economic and social development. SAIL has invested nearly Rs 1,800 crore in the construction of the railway line, while the overall investment in the Rowghat Project has reached approximately Rs 2,000 crore. The project passes through difficult terrain and areas affected by Left Wing Extremism, making execution particularly challenging. Despite these constraints, sustained efforts by all stakeholders have enabled substantial progress over the years.

With most of the railway line construction now complete, finishing works related to the Rowghat station building, passenger amenities, and Signalling and Telecommunication infrastructure are currently underway. Officials indicated that the remaining works within the station premises are expected to be completed by the end of July 2026. Following completion of the pending works, the Commissioner of Railway Safety will undertake a statutory inspection of the rail section. Necessary safety clearances and operational approvals are expected thereafter. Railway officials said the ongoing technical trials are intended to evaluate the readiness of the corridor under varying speed and load conditions. Successful completion of these tests, along with mandatory regulatory approvals, will pave the way for the commencement of passenger train services on the route. The prospect of rail connectivity reaching Rowghat has generated considerable optimism among residents of the Bastar region, who have long awaited improved transportation links. The developmental benefits of the project are already evident. Since passenger train services commenced between Dalli Rajhara and Taroki in 2022, local communities have gained improved access to education, healthcare, employment and business opportunities. Extension of rail services up to Rowghat is expected to further expand these benefits by improving connectivity to remote areas and strengthening links with major towns and cities across Chhattisgarh and the country. Once fully operational, the Dalli Rajhara–Rowghat rail corridor is expected to serve as a critical driver of regional development while also strengthening the logistics network required for sustained iron ore transportation and the long-term growth of the steel sector.
