In his article in CityLine dated June 18, the Editor Vijay Phanshikar has emphasised sincere efforts from civic authorities to curb the parking crisis in Nagpur city. As per The Hitavada report, presently Nagpur city has 31.26 lakh registered vehicles, out of which two-wheeler account for almost 17.66 lakh. Time and again, The Hitavada has raised this serious issue for redressal but always some stop-gap arrangements are made by the civic authorities to hush up the matter. In my view, the following needs to be done to make a serious attempt for redressal of the ongoing parking crisis.
As per NMC’s Transport Department data, 653 buses are operating on Nagpur city roads. There should be a manifold increase in the number of city buses so that the large number of commuters are able to move to their destinations within a reasonable time frame.
On the pattern of school buses, all the Government offices should introduce their buses for officials.
The first priority of Traffic Police Department should be on disciplined and indisciplined parking of vehicles on roads. Round the clock local trains on the Kanhan-Kamptee-NSCB, Itwari-Nagpur-Ajni station routes will minimise vehicular traffic considerably. Most of the residents use road in their locality for parking personal vehicles. To minimise this practice of road capturing, the NMC needs to levy road area occupation tax from such individuals.
In NMC, NIT, State and Union Budget, allocation should be earmarked for developing parking places.
