The intense summer heat returned to Jabalpur on Monday after a brief spell of cloud cover gave way to clear skies. The maximum temperature rose by more than two degrees to settle at 38.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was recorded at 24.7 degrees Celsius.
For the past three days, residents had got some relief as thick clouds blocked the sun's rays and brought the mercury down. The maximum temperature had dropped nearly eight degrees, falling from 44 degrees to 36 degrees Celsius during this period. However, the clouds cleared on Monday and the heat made a sharp comeback.
The weather department has forecast light rain in Jabalpur and some adjoining districts in the coming days. There is also
some hope from the end of Nautapa, the traditional nine-day period of intense heat, which concludes on Tuesday. The forecast and the end of Nautapa have raised hopes of relief from the scorching conditions.
Pre monsoon activity in the region generally begins in the first week of June, though the monsoon itself usually arrives in Jabalpur after June 20. However, the pattern has shifted in recent years. Monsoon rains have been reaching the city in July rather than June for the past few seasons. For now, residents are bracing for continued heat. Doctors and health officials advise people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water and avoid direct exposure to the sun till the monsoon brings lasting relief to the city.
