Doctors at Max Hospital, Nagpur, successfully performed a complex living donor liver transplant on a 55-year-old man suffering from advanced liver cirrhosis, with his 20-year-old daughter stepping forward as the donor. The successful procedure not only saved the patient’s life but also highlighted the transformative impact of living donor transplantation and advanced robotic surgery in improving outcomes for both donors and recipients. Anant Moon, a resident of Amravati, had been battling chronic liver disease for more than 3 years. As the family’s search for a suitable donor continued and the patient’s condition became increasingly critical, his daughter, Anvita Moon, decided to undergo evaluation for liver donation. The decision came at a pivotal moment in her own life; she was pursuing her third year of engineering and preparing for her university examinations.

Balancing the emotional weight of her father’s illness with her academic responsibilities, she underwent rigorous medical, psychological, and fitness assessments to determine her suitability as a donor. Dr Gaurav Chaubal, Director – Liver Transplant and Multi-Organ Transplant, Nanavati Max Hospital, Mumbai and Max Hospital, Nagpur, said, “This case reflects the life-saving potential of living donor liver transplantation and the benefits of robotic donor surgery.” Dr Rajvilas Narkhede, Director – GI Surgery and Liver Transplant, Max Hospital, Nagpur, added, “Through careful planning, comprehensive donor evaluation and coordinated teamwork, we were able to achieve a successful outcome.”
