A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the city after a 17-year-old girl preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) allegedly died by suicide and left a note apologising to her mother saying she could no longer bear the pressure of studies. The incident took place at the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana complex under the Wathoda Police Station limits. The deceased has been identified as Vaidehi Sunil Gulge, a Class 12 student who had been attending coaching classes for JEE preparation. According to police, Vaidehi lived with her mother, Vandana Gulge, who earns a living by working as a seamstress. Her hard work and dreams for her daughter’s future met a tragic end on Friday evening. Police said Vaidehi had been under stress due to academic pressure.

On Friday evening, her mother left home for work while Vaidehi stayed back to study. When Vandana returned later at night, she found her daughter hanging from an iron hook with the help of a saree. Shocked and devastated, she raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to her house. Wathoda Police were informed immediately. A police team rushed to the spot. During the investigation, police recovered a handwritten note in English in which Vaidehi wrote, “Mom, I am sorry. I cannot bear the pressure of JEE studies. Please forgive me.” After completing the panchnama, the police sent the body for post-mortem examination. An accidental death case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

A cause of concern
The incident has once again highlighted the growing pressure faced by students and the need for emotional support and open discussions on mental health. Last month too, a girl had ended her life fearing she would have to appear for the NEET re-examination. The back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over the stress and anxiety affecting young students.
