The app-based cab drivers agitating under the banner of Maharashtra Navnirman Vahtuk Sena for their long pending demands on Tuesday decided to call off the ‘Chakka Jam’ protest for next four days after Nagpur District Collector Kumar Ashirwad gave them assurance to take concrete steps. However, the agitators reiterated that they will intensify the agitation if the demands are not met within the set period.
A delegation of cab drivers under the leadership of Aditya Durugkar (Patil), District President of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), met the District Collector and gave them a charter of demands.
The agitators later on told The Hitavada that the District Collector also directed the concerned authorities to ask aggregators to implement rates fixed by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). According to the cab drivers, the alleged illegal operation of bike taxis through aggregator platforms in Maharashtra is one of the main causes of concern for them. According to agitators, Ola and Uber companies are offering bike taxi services in the city without having its permission.
For the past many weeks, the cab drivers are protesting. On many occasions, they observed strike but to no avail.
Recently, the cab drivers observed ‘no pickup, no drop’ protest at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. later on they withdrew the agitation after district authorities reportedly assured action against bike taxi operations. Protesters now highlighted that they will intensify the agitation and observe ‘Chakka Jam’ protest.
In the meanwhile, the app-based cab drivers attached to various companies were seen carrying passengers throughout the day.
