After a delay of eight days, the southwest monsoon has finally arrived in some parts of Vidarbha on Tuesday. Monsoon has arrived in Washim, Wardha, Yavatmal, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, some parts of Akola and Buldhana on Tuesday.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted advancement of monsoon in entire Vidarbha in the next couple of days as weather is now favourable for further advancement in other parts of the country.
According to IMD, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) passed through Wardha, Dahanu, Raipur, and Motihari on Tuesday. The conditions are favourable for further advancement into some parts of North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, some more parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and parts of Madhya Pradesh in the next 2-3 days.
According to Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, the onset of southwest monsoon will take place in other parts of Vidarbha including Nagpur, Gondia, Bhandara, Brahmapuri, remaining parts of Akola and Buldhana in the next two days.
The pre-monsoon activities in these districts are giving signals of the onset soon and the rains will remain over whole Vidarbha till June 25. Thereafter, a brief 2-3 day break may take place but the monsoon rains will again dominate the region from June 28-29 onwards,
Dr Praveen Kumar, Scientist C, RMC, Nagpur told The Hitavada.
On Tuesday, Nagpur witnessed widespread rain from 5.30 pm onwards which lasted till 6.15 pm. Subsequently, water-logging was witnessed in many parts including low-lying areas. Power cut was also observed due to rains in some localities. Due to water-logging and uprooting of trees, the traffic movement got obstructed at many busy roads. The light rains exposed the monsoon preparedness of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) as many storm water drains got choked which caused water-logging on many residential areas.
Due to La Nina impact in 2025, the southwest monsoon appeared on May 28 which was almost 18 days early as per the usual onset date in Vidarbha. Whereas, this year, El Nino caused the delay by eight days and IMD predicted below normal rainfall this year in entire country.
In last 36 hours, majority districts of Vidarbha witnessed light to heavy rains, leading to declaration of the onset of southwest monsoon in the region. In last 36 hours, Chandrapur witnessed the highest 80 mm rainfall followed by Buldhana (58 mm), Nagpur (34.8 mm), Gadchiroli (24.6 mm), Washim (13.6 mm), Yavatmal (12 mm), Wardha (8.6 mm), Brahmapuri (6.4 mm), Amravati (4.2 mm), Gondia (2 mm) and Akola (0.3 mm).
Due to rains in Vidarbha, all districts witnessed drastic drop in maximum temperature. Gadchiroli witnessed the highest 24 hours temperature drop by 8.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Other parts of Vidarbha recorded the 24 hours temperature drop between 2-7 degrees Celsius.
Construction work open pits, cause traffic jam, water-logging
after rains
Ongoing construction work throughout city caused discomfort for citizens as many areas witnessed water-logging which led to traffic jams after very first spell of rain. Heavy rains on Tuesday exposed tall claims of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) as the dug up pits for laying of sewer line in South Nagpur causing life threatning situation for commuters. Along with this, incomplete cement road construction from Lokmat Sq
to Rahate Colony Square also caused water-logging in offices and hospitals on both side of the Wardha Road.
Traffic jam was observed throughout the city on Tuesday evening. Due to traffic jam on main roads, the commuters took internal roads to avoid traffic jam but it led jams in all internal roads as well. Uprooting of trees also caused trouble for commuters as roads got blocked at some main roads in different parts of the city.
