Mayor Neeta Thakre has urged officers in the municipal body to strictly enforce the rules framed by the Central Government and the directives issued by the Supreme Court to improve Nagpur’s ranking in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. She also appealed to citizens to respond positively to these initiatives. Thakre was speaking at the workshop and technology exhibition for bulk waste generators jointly organised by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) at the Vasantrao Naik Smriti Sabhagruh, VANAMATI. Mayor presided over the event.
Dignitaries present on the dais included Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar; MPCB Regional Officer Hema Deshpande; Special Health Committee Chairperson Manisha Atkare; Dharampeth Zone Chairperson Dhanshree Deshpande; Tax Assessment and Collection Special Committee Chairperson Sarita Kavre; Mangalwari Zone Chairperson Seema Davre; Nehru Nagar Zone Chairperson Seema Dhomne; Lakshmi Nagar Zone Chairperson Laxmi Yadav; Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, and Chief Sanitation Officer Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, various assistant commissioners and zonal officers.
The workshop aimed to create awareness among representatives of these bulk waste institutions regarding the new laws. Through expert lectures and presentations, participants were guided on the scope of the new law, its provisions, assigned responsibilities, and the punitive actions, fines applicable to violators.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor emphasized the NMC’s commitment to making Nagpur clean and beautiful. To boost public awareness, she suggested using modern technology, such as a mobile app, to send advance alerts about arriving garbage collection vans.
“While waste collection and disposal are the responsibilities of the NMC, the dream of a clean Nagpur cannot be fulfilled without public participation. Officials should first guide citizens with patience and persuasion. However, if individuals or institutions continue to violate the law, strict punitive action and fines must be levied,” the Mayor directed.
Municipal Commissioner stated that collective efforts are vital to making Nagpur a garbage-free city, and the civic body will leverage new technology to achieve this.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat delivered the introductory remarks. The event was moderated by Public Relations Officer Manish Soni, and the vote of thanks was proposed by Chief Sanitation Officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle.
