In a significant milestone for biodiversity conservation and traditional agriculture, four unique traditional crops of Madhya Pradesh have been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag. The notification was officially issued by the GI Registry Office in Chennai on Thursday. The four crops recognised are Sitahi Kutki (Sitahi Minor Millet), Nagdaman Kutki (Nagdaman Minor Millet), Baigani Arhar (Baigani Pigeon Pea) and Chhatriya Dhan (Chhatriya Paddy). As per details shared by the JNAU, Sitahi and Nagdaman Kutki are highly nutritious minor millets, rich in dietary fiber, minerals and antioxidants, making them health-promoting and climate-resilient crops. Baigani Arhar is known for its excellent grain quality and high nutritional value, while Chhatriya Dhan is famous for its distinct aroma, taste, and local adaptability.

These crops have been traditionally preserved for generations, particularly by Baiga tribe from Dindori region. The GI tag legally protects the authenticity and quality of these crops, paving way for better market prices, branding and export opportunities, which will directly boost livelihood and economic empowerment of tribal farmers. This achievement is the result of a joint effort between Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University (JNAU) and Department of Farmer Welfare and Agriculture Development, Government of Madhya Pradesh. The State’s first GI Cell was established at JNAU, Jabalpur, with financial support from Madhya Pradesh State Agricultural Marketing (Mandi) Board, Bhopal, to meticulously document, verify and complete the successful registration process. JNAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Pramod Kumar Mishra hailed this as a historic milestone that will establish a distinct identity for MP’s rich agricultural heritage at both national and international levels.
