Once a crowd-puller during city’s 2023 Civil 20 (C20) Summit, the promenade beside Central Jail now battles broken lights, neglect and growing safety concerns
A promenade built as one of the showpieces of Nagpur’s makeover for the March 2023 Civil 20 (C20) Summit has slipped into neglect, with defunct lights plunging the walkway beside Nagpur Central Jail on Wardha Road into darkness and raising safety concerns among residents. During a visit, couples were found sitting in poorly lit corners, while residents alleged that some individuals also consume alcohol on the premises and remain there until late into the night.
Once a bustling public space that drew crowds and even slowed traffic as visitors stopped to admire the illuminated stretch and click photographs, the promenade is now largely deserted after sunset.
The landscaped walkway, developed with decorative lighting, seating areas and greenery as part of C20 beautification drive, had emerged as one of Nagpur’s most popular public spaces during the summit. Residents recall the promenade becoming a tourist attraction almost overnight, attracting visitors from across the city during the event.
When lights went out...
Barely three years later, that transformation has faded. Residents said, the lighting
system began deteriorating after several fixtures were allegedly damaged during
thunderstorms, while others were reportedly stolen. With most lights now lying defunct, the promenade loses its appeal once darkness sets in.
Morning walkers continue to use the stretch, but many residents said they no longer feel comfortable visiting after dusk. Families, women and senior citizens, who once frequented the promenade during the evenings, have largely stopped coming due to poor lighting and growing concerns over safety. The absence of regular maintenance by State PWD (NH) Department and surveillance has allowed the condition of the promenade to deteriorate steadily.
Ironically, the promenade lies beside the Central Jail and along one of the city’s prominent roads. Yet, residents say inadequate lighting has allowed anti-social elements to occupy the stretch after dark, undermining the very purpose for which it was visualised.
Residents have urged the authorities to restore the damaged lighting system, replace stolen fixtures, repair other civic infrastructure and improve cleanliness. They have also demanded CCTV cameras and regular police patrolling during evening and night hours to discourage anti-social activities and restore public confidence.
Public money was invested in creating the promenade as part of Nagpur’s C20 legacy. Residents say, preserving that legacy now requires more than beautification--it demands sustained maintenance, security and civic accountability before another public landmark fades into darkness.
