BHARATIYA Janata Party (BJP) leaders, members and workers observed Constitution Murder Day to mark anniversary of the Emergency imposed in 1975 on Thursday. They organised a seminar at the auditorium on Cultural Street. During the programme, democracy activists and former MISA detainees were honoured for their contribution to the restoration of democratic rights during the Emergency period. Addressing the gathering, BJP State In-charge Dr Mahendra Singh termed the Emergency as the biggest attack on India’s democratic system. He alleged that Emergency was imposed by the then Congress Government to protect political power and suppress democratic institutions. Referring to the political developments of 1975, he said there was neither a war-like situation nor an internal crisis that justified the imposition of Emergency. Dr Singh said thousands of political workers, social activists and journalists were jailed during the 19 month period, while restrictions were imposed on the media through censorship. He claimed that people opposing the government faced severe hardships and democratic rights were curtailed across the country.

Dr Singh said the struggle and sacrifices made by democracy activists played a key role in restoring constitutional values and democratic freedoms. Recalling the contributions of leaders and workers who opposed the Emergency, he said their efforts helped safeguard India’s democratic framework. Criticising the Congress, he alleged that the party’s history was marked by attempts to weaken democratic institutions. He also referred to the Shah Commission’s findings, stating that the Emergency was imposed without constitutional necessity. Highlighting the present government’s commitment to constitutional values, Dr Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently worked towards strengthening democratic institutions since assuming office. He urged party workers to educate younger generations about the Emergency period and its impact on democracy. During the programme, an exhibition depicting events and experiences from the Emergency era was inaugurated. The seminar was also addressed by MLA Ashok Rohani, BJP District President Ratnesh Sonkar and Democracy Fighters Association District President Anjani Singh, who shared their views and experiences. Several public representatives, party office-bearers and workers were present on the occasion.
