In a historic milestone for Madhya Pradesh’s agricultural sector, two of Jabalpur’s most celebrated local produces including ‘Jabalpuri Matar’ (peas) and ‘Jabalpur Singhada’ (water chestnut), have officially been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This marks a monumental first for the country, as Jabalpur becomes the first region in India to secure a GI tag specifically for peas and water chestnuts.
The successful registration was spearheaded by Maikalsuta Farmer Producer Company Limited, Patan. Directors, Raghvendra Singh Patel and Dhananjay Patel informed that following continuous hearings by the GI Registry Chennai, the case was strongly presented with critical data and collaborative support from Madhya Pradesh Government’s Directorate of Horticulture and local Horticulture Department, Jabalpur. Renowned expert Padma Shri Dr Rajnikant, popularly known as “GI Man of India,” confirmed official registration, emphasising that this recognition serves as a formal validation from the Government regarding the unique quality and rich historical significance of these two local crops.
Following the achievement, the Maikalsuta FPO expressed its deep gratitude to the State Government and Horticulture Department for their unwavering backing.
The acquisition of GI tag is poised to act as a security shield for local cultivators, completely eliminating counterfeit branding. Moving forward, no outside trader or third party will be legally permitted to sell ordinary peas or water chestnuts under the prestigious ‘Jabalpuri’ name.
With quality and authenticity now legally guaranteed, farmers are expected to command premium prices from domestic and international buyers, directly elevating rural incomes.
Furthermore, growth of local trading networks will offer long-term price security to the region’s agricultural community. Nourished by the fertile soil and sweet waters of Narmada river, these products are now ready for global stage.
The GI tag opens up extensive avenues for international export and is anticipated to drive significant infrastructure growth in Jabalpur, including expansion of food processing units and advanced cold storage chains, increased production of value-added commercial goods like Singhada atta (water chestnut flour) and packaged frozen peas and creation of massive employment opportunities for local youth within the processing and logistics sectors. This monumental achievement not only promises to take authentic taste of Jabalpur to the global palate but also sets the stage to make the region’s Annadatas (farmers) self-reliant and prosperous.
