IT WAS double delight For Thane’s Kavya Bhatt as she won women’s singles and U-19 girls singles titles in the 1st Maharashtra State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University’s Subhedar Hall, on Saturday.
Men’s singles crown was bagged by Jash Modi of TST while Prateek Tulsani of Thane emerged champion in U-19 boys singles event.
In women’s singles final, third seed Kavya upset TST’s top seed Ananya Chande in five games 11-7, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.
In the semis, Ananya defeated 5th seed Shruti Amrute of Thane 11-9, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5 while Kavya beat Seed No 2 Sampada Bhiwandkar (TST) 11-7, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9. In the girls Under-19 title clash, Kavya lived up to her top billing defeating second seed Swara Karmarkar (NSH) 11-8, 11-4, 12-10, 11-9. In the semis, Kavya beat 4th seed
Ruchita Darvatkar (PUN) 4-11, 11-5, 15-13, 11-9 while Swara defeated Nagpur’s 11th Jennifer Varghese 12-10, 5-11, 11-5, 11-9.
In the men’s singles summit clash, top seed Jash was in full flow against the 11th seed from Pune Ishan Khandekar winning 11-9, 11-6, 11-7, 11-5. In their last-four clashes, Jash defeated 4th seed Anish Sontakke (KOL) 6-11, 11-13, 13-11, 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5 in tough seven games; while Ishan stunned second seed Sagar Kasture (TST) 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 5-11, 11-5, 11-4 in six engrossing games.
In the boys Under-19 clash for supremacy, unseeded Prateek Tulsani from Thane toppled fourth seed Arnav Kshirsagar (TST) 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 13-11. In semi-finals, Arnav beat Param Bhiwandkar (TST) 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8 and Prateek got the better of third seed Akanksh Sahoo (TST) 12-14, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 11-9.
Prizes were distributed by chief guest Justice Anil Kilor along with Adv Ashutosh Potnis, Secretary MSTTA; Dr Sharad Suryawanshi, Shekhar Tongo, Vice-President NDTTA; Adv Akhilesh Potnis, Secretary NDTTA, Deepak Dhote, Deepak Kanetkar and Sanjay Potnis were present. Praful Nandedkar conducted the event.
