Prakash Pohare to present case of farmers for MSP

The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) is currently formulating the pricing policy for Rabi crops for the 2027–28 season, including wheat, barley, gram (chickpea), lentil, rapeseed / mustard, and safflower. In this connection, a meeting of representatives of farmers’ organisations from across the country has been scheduled for June 5, 2026, at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Centre, Janpath, New Delhi. Farmer leader Prakash Pohare, President of the Bharatiya Kisan Parishad and National President of Kisan Brigade, has been specially invited to participate in the meeting.

He is widely known for consistently presenting a forceful and well-researched position on the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP) in meetings of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices. During an earlier meeting, he had strongly objected to the fact that a discussion crucial to determining the future of Indian farmers was concluded within merely two to three hours. In subsequent meetings as well, he vigorously presented the farmers’ perspective for nearly twelve minutes, a fact witnessed by many participants.

At the upcoming meeting, Pohare plans to present detailed evidence showing how farmers have been deprived of fair returns due to MSPs that often fail even to cover production costs. Referring to the commitments made by the Modi Government and the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, he will advocate for MSPs that ensure farmers receive at least a 50 percent profit over their cost of production.

Pohare has alleged that while determining MSPs, the recommendations submitted by various State Agricultural Price Commissions are not given adequate consideration. Instead, prices are fixed on the basis of average figures, resulting in the economic exploitation of farmers across the country. He further demands that the commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices publicly disclose state-wise data on production costs and the MSP recommendations made by individual states.
