Maharashtra has emerged as the top performer in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna, installing solar projects on 4,700 homes on May 29, contributing to a record 15,000 installations across the country in
a single day.
Union Minister for Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi congratulated Maharashtra on achieving this milestone and praised the state for entering the league of regions with over 6 lakh solar installations. “Maharashtra’s success is a testament to the effective implementation of the scheme and the enthusiasm of its people towards adopting clean energy,” Joshi said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s guidance has accelerated the scheme’s implementation in the state. “We are committed to making Maharashtra a leader in renewable energy.
The Prime Minister’s Solar Rooftop Scheme is a game-changer for our State, and we will continue to support initiatives that promote sustainable development,” Fadnavis said.
In May, Maharashtra led the country in applications received under the scheme, ranked second in total installations, topped in inspections, and was second in empaneling vendors. The state received 4.49 lakh applications, far ahead of Gujarat (3 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (1 lakh), Rajasthan (44,000), and Kerala (35,000).
The scheme, launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offers direct subsidies to households for installing rooftop solar projects: Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems. The subsidy is aimed at encouraging households to adopt solar energy, reduce their electricity bills, and contribute to the country’s renewable energy goals.
Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Abha Shukla and Chief Minister’s Additional Chief Secretary and MSEDCL Chairman Lokesh Chandra praised the efforts of
officials and employees for this achievement.
Maharashtra’s achievement is expected to boost its renewable energy capacity and reduce its dependence on conventional power sources.
The State Government has set a target of installing 1 GW of solar rooftop projects by the end of 2026, and this achievement is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
The scheme has been a huge success across the country, with many states achieving significant milestones in solar installations. Maharashtra’s achievement is a testament to the country's potential for renewable energy and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
The scheme has also created employment opportunities for thousands of people in the state, particularly in the solar installation and maintenance sector. The State Government has launched initiatives to train youth in solar installation and maintenance, providing them with a career opportunity in the renewable energy sector.
