Popular South Korean star Seo In-guk says he loves the genre of office romances, be it Boyfriend on Demand or his latest show See You at Work Tomorrow!, as he believes these
stories allow for a far more
dramatic expression for the
characters.
In the show, currently streaming on Prime Video, Seo features as Kang Si-woo, whose stern exterior hides a talented and kind corporate employee who has climbed the ladder with his sheer talent.
"See You at Work Tomorrow!", an adaptation of a popular webtoon, features Seo with actor Park Ji-hyun of "You and Everything Else" fame, while in his previous show "Boyfriend on Demand", he was paired opposite Blackpink's Jisoo.
In an interview with PTI, Seo said the office romance genre has elements that are unique and powerful.
"When you portray lovers at work, it's something that you can't let other people know, right? So there's a secretive element to it that I think adds to the heart fluttering
moments. You can showcase a world that only these two people
belong to.
"For example, when you try to display your affection toward one another without getting caught, I feel like those moments can really amplify the romance. And then once these characters get off work, there's a sense of freedom and comfort that allows for the happiness that the two people feel to be more dramatically expressed.
So, I love office romances," the actor said.
Seo, 38, described his character Kang as someone who is cold and uptight.
"He's called the '3-no-man', meaning 'no sorry, no people, no smile'. He's a perfectionist at work. I think that was why I was drawn to him."
The actor first rose to stardom with shows like Reply 1997 and High School King of Savvy, and later impressed fans with his performances in Shopping King Louie, Death's Game, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes and Doom At
Your Service.
Having played different kinds of characters in his career, Seo said he does not seek out morally upright characters as that would be
limiting.
"If you try to focus on particular characters or stories that you want to do; for example, if I only wanted to portray morally strict characters, there is a limitation to that. I also think it doesn't align with my personal ambition for my career. "I don't look for characters that have strong morals per se. If you look at my career, I've portrayed characters that are very violent, brutal, some who abuse the law, some who are scammers... I don't try to look for particular characters in terms of their moral complexity. There's just so much that I want to try and show in terms of genre and character going forward," he said.
See You At Work Tomorrow is directed by Cho Eun-sol and written by Kim Kyung-min. The series is produced by Studio Dragon and Kross Pictures.
