In a freak mishap, one person was killed after debris of a dilapidated building crashed at Geetanjali Square on Monday evening. Call it fate, the man was just walking into the store to meet his relative, the tragedy occurred and he is identified as Santosh Gaur (50), residing near Futala Lake. The incident has triggered scare in the old city area, given the fact it is dotted with several such buildings that are listed as dangerous by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
As per Fire Brigade, the parapet wall of G+3 building of Bombay Scooters on Central Avenue collapsed. The time was around 5.30 pm, a busy time on the stretch. Fortunately, not many persons were around and hence, a major tragedy was averted. However, Gaur was unlucky as he got caught just when the heavy portion of the parapet rained on him. Although by-standers quickly rushed and pulled out Gaur and he was rushed to nearby Mayo Hospital. But the doctor, after examining Gaur, pronounced him dead on arrival.
The three-storeyed building was commercial-cum-residential and housed shops on ground floor, while branch of Canara Bank is located on first floor and residential area on second floor. The third floor is vacant. The parapet wall on terrace gave way and the debris fell down in which Gaur was trapped. A four-wheeler suffered considerable damage along with six two-wheelers that were smashed. The loss is estimated at Rs five lakh.
Two fire tenders from Ganjipeth Fire Brigade Station was dispatched to the spot. The firemen removed the damaged vehicles and broke down the heavy parapet wall material and cleared the spot.
NMC is likely to again take review and try to get the dilapidated buildings vacated. The owners, however, are reluctant to move out and this increases the risk in the event of such an incident.
Santosh Gaur leaves behind wife, two children and a host of relatives to mourn the loss. He will be cremated at Ambazari ghat on Tuesday at 3 pm.
