IN A landmark medical achievement for Central India, KIMS Kingsway Hospitals, Nagpur, has successfully performed its first alogeneic bone marrow transplant (BMT) on a young child battling relapsed myeloid sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer originating from abnormal bone marrow cells. The highly complex and life-saving procedure was led by Dr Atish Bakane, Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant specialist, along with a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, transfusion medicine experts, and support staff. The child had previously suffered a relapse of myeloid sarcoma and required an allogeneic stem cell transplant, a sophisticated procedure in which healthy blood-forming stem cells from a compatible donor are transplanted to replace diseased bone marrow. Given the aggressive nature of the disease, timely intervention and meticulous post-transplant care were critical. Following intensive conditioning therapy and treatment in a specialised sterile bone marrow transplant unit, the donor stem cells were successfully engrafted.

The patient is presently stable and recovering well under close medical supervision. Speaking about the milestone, Dr Atish Bakane said, “Relapsed myeloid sarcoma is among the most challenging pediatric cancers to treat. Performing a successful allogeneic bone marrow transplant requires precise donor matching, advanced clinical expertise, infection control protocols, and continuous monitoring. The successful outcome reflects the strength of our dedicated BMT programme and gives renewed hope to families dealing with complex blood disorders and childhood cancers.” Highlighting the hospital’s infrastructure capabilities, Dr Tushar Gawad, Unit Head, KIMS Kingsway Hospitals, said, “This achievement is a testament to the world-class infrastructure and clinical excellence available at KIMS Kingsway Hospital. Our state-of-the-art bone marrow transplant unit, advanced laboratory support, specialised critical care services, and highly trained multidisciplinary teams enable us to offer treatments that were once available only in metropolitan cities. We remain committed to making advanced and affordable healthcare accessible to patients across Central India.” The successful transplant was supported by seamless coordination from Payal Gotefode, BMT Coordinator, who played a crucial role in donor coordination, treatment scheduling, patient navigation, and family counselling throughout the transplant journey.
