Brief cloud cover, strong winds and moderate showers brought temporary relief to the city on Thursday afternoon, making the atmosphere pleasant outdoors. However, rain also raised humidity levels inside homes, causing considerable inconvenience to residents.
Intense summer heat had already staged a sharp comeback after three days of cloudy conditions. Maximum and minimum temperatures rose by more than two degrees Celsius.
During the recent cloud cover, residents had got considerable relief as thick clouds blocked sun rays and brought the mercury down nearly eight degrees from 44 degrees Celsius to 36 degrees Celsius.
However, clouds cleared and the heat returned with force.
On Thursday maximum temperature was recorded 39.0 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees below normal while minimum was 27.8 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Weather Department has forecast light rain and thundershowers in Jabalpur and adjoining districts in the coming days. The mercury is expected to remain at current levels before rising again after three days.
Pre-monsoon activity in the region generally begins in the first week of June, though the monsoon itself usually arrives in Jabalpur after June 20. However, the pattern has shifted in recent seasons, with monsoon rains reaching the city in July rather than June.
Doctors and health officials have advised residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours for some more days and avoid direct sun exposure till the monsoon brings lasting relief.
