- Mahayuti wins two Vidarbha seats unopposed
- Arun Lakhani from Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli, Dushyant Chaturvedi from Yavatmal elected
In a significant boost to the ruling Mahayuti alliance ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections, two of the five local authorities constituency seats in Vidarbha were won unopposed after rival candidates withdrew their nominations on the last day of withdrawal.
Dushyant Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) was declared elected unopposed from the Yavatmal Local Authorities Constituency, while Arun Lakhani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured an uncontested victory from the Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli Local Authorities Constituency.
The developments came as a surprise, with few anticipating that, candidates backed by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) would retreat from the contest.
In Yavatmal, the political scenario changed dramatically when Nitin Bhutada, who had claimed to be a BJP candidate, and Congress nominee Sahebrao Kamble, withdrew their nominations, paving the way for Chaturvedi’s unopposed election. Similarly, in the Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli constituency, Shailesh Agrawal withdrew his nomination, clearing the path for Arun Lakhani’s victory without a contest. The remaining three constituencies—Nagpur, Bhandara-Gondia and Amravati—will go to polls on June 18.
In the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency by-election, BJP candidate Dr Rajiv Potdar will face Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe in a direct contest.
The Bhandara-Gondia constituency will witness a contest between BJP’s Avinash Brahmankar and Dilip Bansod, while in Amravati, BJP nominee Pravin Pote is pitted against Congress candidate Harshdeep Deshmukh. With Mahayuti already securing two seats unopposed in Vidarbha, attention now shifts to the three remaining constituencies, where electoral battles are set to unfold later this month.
Mahayuti holds clear advantage
in remaining MLC contests in Vid
With the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections from local authorities' constituencies scheduled for June 18 in Nagpur, Amravati and Bhandara-Gondia, the ruling Mahayuti alliance appears to enjoy a decisive numerical advantage in all three seats.
A look at the strength of elected representatives in the respective local bodies indicates that, the BJP-led alliance is well-placed to retain the remaining seats after already securing two victories unopposed in Vidarbha.
In the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency, the Mahayuti's electoral college strength stands at 538 votes, comprising 500 BJP, 33 Shiv Sena (Shinde) and 5 NCP members. In comparison, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has 213 votes, including 174 Congress, 20 Shiv Sena (UBT) and 19 NCP (SP) members.
The contest pits BJP candidate Dr Rajiv Potdar against Congress nominee Atul Londhe.
The situation is similarly favourable for the ruling alliance in Amravati, where BJP candidate Pravin Pote enjoys the backing of a Mahayuti vote base of around 202 members, compared to the MVA’s 136 votes supporting Congress candidate Harshdeep Deshmukh.
In Bhandara-Gondia, the Mahayuti also holds a commanding position with approximately 308 votes, while the MVA’s strength stands at 123 votes. BJP candidate Avinash Brahmankar is facing Dilip Bansod in the constituency.
Political observers note that, while cross-voting and local equations can sometimes alter outcomes in Legislative Council elections, the numerical strength currently favours Mahayuti in all three constituencies. Barring any unexpected development, the alliance appears poised to further consolidate its position in Vidarbha’s local authorities constituencies.
The results will be closely watched as they are expected to provide an indication of the political mood among local self-government representatives in the region ahead of the future electoral battles.
