A video clip showing a motorcycle being ridden on the first phase of the Indora-Dighori flyover went viral on social media recently, triggering rumours that the long-awaited project had finally been opened to traffic. Authorities, however, clarified that the flyover remains closed and is awaiting a formal opening.
Officials associated with the project told ‘The Hitavada’ that, no public access has been permitted on the flyover and the viral video was a result of unauthorised entry. Security guards have been deployed at both ends of the structure to prevent access until its official opening.
According to officials, some persons have been threatening security personnel with weapons and forcibly entering the flyover despite repeated warnings.
Such incidents have been reported on multiple occasions, they said.
The first phase of the project, extending from Bhande Plot Square to Dighori Square, was originally scheduled to be opened by the end of April. However, the inauguration was delayed due to pending work on the landing ramp near Bada Tajbagh.
Officials said, the remaining construction work has now been completed and the flyover is ready for opening. However, traffic will be allowed only after a formal inauguration ceremony. The date for the inauguration is yet to be finalised.
The viral video surfaced at a time when commuters have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the elevated corridor, which is expected to provide significant relief from chronic traffic congestion on one of East Nagpur’s busiest routes.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround the completion timeline of the second phase of the project.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is still awaiting nod from Indian Railways to launch a girder over the railway crossing at Pachpaoli, a crucial component of the remaining work. Although NHAI officials maintain that construction can be completed soon after the required permission is granted, substantial finishing work will still remain.
Road surfacing, painting, installation of streetlights and other ancillary works are yet to be completed. In addition, construction of ramps near Daga Hospital is still in progress.
With less than a month remaining before the June-end target set for completion of the entire project, the pending works have raised questions over whether the deadline can be achieved. Once completed, the Indora-Dighori flyover is expected to emerge as a major traffic artery connecting eastern parts of the city and reducing travel time for thousands of commuters every day.
