A massive fire broke out early on Sunday morning on the upper floor of a three-storey commercial building at busy Lalghati intersection, causing widespread panic as thick plumes of smoke enveloped the area. The blaze erupted around 8 am at the Bhoj Inn Bar and Restaurant, quickly spreading across the entire upper structure and venting flames visible from several kilometers away.
Emergency responders acted swiftly, deploying five fire tenders from various municipal stations across the city to battle the raging inferno.
Fire Officer Saurabh Patel reported that the control room received a distress call at 8:30 am, immediately dispatching three fire tenders to the spot.
Recognising severity of the fire as it began consuming the second floor, the department rushed five additional vehicles to assist.
Firefighters had to shatter the glass walls of the structure to gain entry and direct water cannons inside, successfully bringing the fire under complete control by 10 am after a grueling two-hour operation.
Tragedy averted in Restaurant Hub
A catastrophic explosion was narrowly averted due to quick thinking of firefighters, who carefully extricated five commercial LPG cylinders from the restaurant kitchen during the containment process, two of which were fully charged. The commercial complex houses six other active food outlets, including Bapu ki Kutiya in the basement, Domino’s on the ground floor, and Indian Coffee House at the rear.
While the entire building was filled with suffocating smoke and neighbouring high-voltage electricity transformers were threatened, no secondary blasts occurred.
Alert security guard raises alarm
Station House Officer KG Shukla confirmed that the fire was first spotted by an on-duty security guard stationed near the building. The guard initially observed smoke coming from the window, assuming it to be routine emissions from the restaurant kitchen. However, upon seeing active flames break out, he immediately alerted the police, who subsequently coordinated with the Municipal Corporation and the Fire Department for an emergency response. Short circuit suspected: Initial investigations by the Fire Department point towards short circuit as the primary trigger for the fire. Since the restaurant was closed at the time of the outbreak and no employees were inside, no casualties or physical injuries were reported. However, restaurant operator Anoop Rizwani stated that the entire floor’s false ceiling, furniture, bar counters, sofas, chairs, and kitchen equipment were reduced to ashes, with the total financial loss still being calculated.
Severe Regulatory Gaps in Citywide Fire Safety: The incident has cast a spotlight on the dismal state of fire safety compliance across Bhopal’s hospitality sector. Data reveals that out of approximately 2,000 operational hotels and restaurants in the capital city, only 40 possess a valid Fire Safety Certificate, and an equal nominal number have secured official fire plan approvals. While fire department officials clarified that this specific 9-meter-tall building was not legally mandated to secure a Fire NOC because automatic fire suppression systems are only compulsory for structures exceeding 15 meters, the lack of automated safeguards dramatically accelerated the spread of the flames.
