Mayo doctor, steno arrested for demanding Rs 20,000 bribe in medical certificate case
Staff Reporter :
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has taken action against a senior doctor of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo Hospital) and a stenographer for allegedly demanding a bribe to issue a Medical Board recommendation and medical certificate.
According to the ACB, the complainant is an Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector posted at the Sub-Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Wardha. After remaining on medical leave for three months, he was asked to appear before the Medical Board at Mayo Hospital, Nagpur, to obtain a recommendation and certificate required for his leave period.
The complainant alleged that Dr Nandkishor Kamalnarayan Jaiswal, Chairman of the Medical Board and Head of the Surgery Department, along with stenographer Ashish Metekar, demanded Rs 30,000 to issue the required documents.
Following the complaint, the ACB verified the allegations on June 24. During the verification, both accused allegedly repeated their demand of Rs 30,000 and later agreed to accept Rs 20,000 after negotiations.
When the ACB laid a trap, the accused reportedly became suspicious and did not accept the bribe amount. However, based on the verified demand for the bribe, the ACB took both Dr Jaiswal and Metekar into custody on Tuesday.
A case is being registered against the two accused at Tehsil Police Station under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of ACB Superintendent of Police Dr Digambar Pradhan and Addl SP Madhuri Baviskar and Vijay Mahulkar. The bureau said complainants’ identities will be protected, the trap money will be refunded within a month, and their genuine government work will also be completed.
