After a few days of light to moderate showers, rainfall has come to a halt in Jabalpur. The city has remained dry for the last three-four days despite active monsoon conditions across Madhya Pradesh. Residents are now eagerly waiting for widespread rainfall. Over the past few days, dark clouds gathered over the city and raised hopes of heavy rain. However, the clouds passed after bringing only light showers in a few localities. While Jabalpur received little rain, several neighbouring districts recorded good rainfall. According to weather experts, a fresh spell of rain is expected to begin from July 15. They hope the city may receive widespread rainfall in the coming days if weather systems become more favourable. This monsoon, the rainfall has remained much below normal.

By July 11 last year, Jabalpur had received around 503 mm of rainfall. This year, the city has recorded only 181.4 mm, leaving a deficit of more than 321.6 mm. During the last 24 hours, only 0.6 mm of rainfall was recorded. On the corresponding day last year, the city had received 40.2 mm of rain. The maximum temperature on Saturday was 32.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 25.7 degrees Celsius. The lack of rainfall has also increased humidity, making the weather uncomfortable. Weather experts said July is usually the most active month of the southwest monsoon and contributes nearly 40 per cent of the season's total rainfall. Jabalpur normally receives about 17 inches of rainfall during the month. The weather department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in some parts of Madhya Pradesh. Strong winds with speeds of 40 to 60 kmph may also accompany rain in some areas. However, Jabalpur is yet to experience such weather. If the forecast of widespread rainfall from July 15 proves accurate, the city’s rainfall deficit is expected to reduce significantly in the coming days. Citizens are hoping the next spell of monsoon will bring much-needed relief and improve the overall rainfall situation.
