Speculation is mounting over the next leadership change at the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) as incumbent president Deepak Baij completes three years in office on July 12. While no formal announcement has come from the party, social media campaigns and local leaders are urging the Congress high command to consider former Deputy Chief Minister T S Singhdeo for the post. Support for Singhdeo has been visible on Facebook, where several groups including the self-styled ‘Adibaba Fans Club Surguja’ have circulated posters demanding his appointment. These posts argue that Singhdeo’s long-standing commitment to the party and administrative experience make him a suitable choice to lead the CPCC as the state gears up for the 2026 assembly elections.

Singhdeo, however, has downplayed the push, stressing that the CPCC presidency has no fixed term and that such appointments are determined by the party high command. “When Deepak Baij was appointed, no specific tenure was set; he will continue to discharge his responsibilities as long as the role is entrusted to him,” Singhdeo said, underlining that leadership changes are a prerogative of the central leadership. Asked whether he would welcome the responsibility, Singhdeo urged restraint, noting that public speculation especially on social media complicates internal party decisions. Political analysts say the debate over the CPCC presidency highlights broader strategic calculations within the Congress ahead of the 2026 polls.

Appointing Singhdeo could be aimed at consolidating support among key voter segments and projecting experienced leadership. Conversely, retaining Baij would signal continuity and perhaps reward loyalty from regional cadres. The party high command may weigh factional dynamics, caste equations, and electoral arithmetic before finalising the successor. With assembly elections less than a year away, the choice of state president will be watched closely as a barometer of the Congress’s organisational priorities and electoral strategy in Chhattisgarh.
