Hudkeshwar Police have arrested a man posing as a spiritual healer for allegedly raping a woman after luring her family with the promise of securing a Mathadi worker’s job for their son through religious rituals.
The accused has been identified as Sanjay Shirode, who was arrested soon after the offence was registered. Police have produced him before a court and are continuing the investigation.
According to police, the complainant, a labourer and her husband first met the accused at Mhalgi Nagar Square on June 16. During their conversation, the accused claimed that he could help their 21-year-old son get a Mathadi job.
He later visited the family’s house and suggested that a special puja was necessary to ensure the appointment.
Police said the accused visited the house again on June 27 with ritual materials. During the ritual, he allegedly sent the woman’s husband and son out to collect roots from nearby trees. He insisted that no one else should remain at home. Once the woman was alone, he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The victim told police that the accused allegedly promised to get her son a job, bring prosperity to the family and complete all their pending work if she submitted to his demands. When she resisted, he allegedly raped her and threatened to kill her husband if she disclosed the incident. Out of fear, the woman remained silent for several days.
She then informed her husband after the accused contacted the family again on July 5. The couple approached Hudkeshwar Police, who registered an offence, arrested the accused.
Police are verifying whether the accused targeted others using a similar modus operandi.
